How coaching differs from therapy
An ADHD coach is a highly-trained professional who can help you come up with ways to handle things made harder by ADHD symptoms. Coaching focuses on practical ways to deal with everyday tasks.
The coaching process is a lot like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a type of psychotherapy that works to help patients change the way they react to situations.
While CBT focuses on thoughts and emotions, ADHD coaching is focused on teaching clients how to adopt new behaviors. An ADHD coach will work with you to pinpoint how ADHD affects you specifically. Then, you’ll learn how to problem-solve issues as they happen.
Positive feelings may be a natural result of ADHD coaching, but the primary focus is on action, accountability, and sustainable change.
An easy way to distinguish the two is to think of archeologists and architects. Therapists are like archeologists because therapy deals with healing pain and resolving issues from the past that are causing issues with functioning in the present. Coaches, on the other hand, are like architects. They are focused on the future and on building specific, actionable outcomes that move their clients forward and lead to greater fulfillment.
